A Massachusetts police officer has been fired after faking a story about exchanging gunfire with a suspect who drove by him in a pickup truck — a report that had towns in the King Philip area on edge for two days.
Police initially said that about 2:15 p.m. Wednesday a suspect in a dark-colored — possibly maroon — pickup fired two to three shots at the officer on Forest Road, near Birch Street, causing him to lose control of his cruiser and strike a tree. The cruiser then ignited in flames.
But, police said Thursday the only ballistic evidence found at the scene belonged to the officer, who works part time and was hired as a patrol officer in June. The evidence suggests the officer fired shots into his own cruiser.
